In 2004, Quidam de Revel topped the World Breeding Championships Jumping Stallion ratings for the second year running, establishing himself as the pre-eminent – and most expensive – living sire of jumping horses. With ten (!) of his progeny jumping in Jerez 2002, he was the stallion with the greatest number of progeny at the WEG.
Quidam was himself a jumping star, a member of the French Olympic Team, and fourth individually at the Barcelona Olympic Games with Hervé Godignon.
In an article in HORSE INTERNATIONAL (No 1 – 2003), Velin told the journalist, Pernille Linder Velander: “I am a Thoroughbred person. Quidam is the kind of horse that appeals to me. He is a perfect beauty. If you compare him to the legendary Northern Dancer, you could hardly tell who is who. They could be twins.”
But Mr Velin got more than a breeding stallion, he purchased the ultimate ‘school-master’ for his son, Thomas, taking him on to win such prestigious events as the Grand Prix of Hanover.
According to Thomas: “The feeling I got from Quidam has taught me what it should feel like to sit on a really good horse. If you have not had that experience, you simply cannot imagine what it can be like. When in the air, if needed, Quidam could just… like put in another gear, make another effort and jump higher still even after taking off from the ground.”
Quidam de Revel unites two of the most important lines of the Selle Français horse – the lines of Jalisco and Uriel. The Nankin son, Uriel was one of the most successful French stallions, producing more than 100 international showjumpers, which gave him a jumping index of 121, the highest recorded in France at the time. Uriel was the sire of 26 stallion sons – including Calvados who was influential in Holland, standing at the Nijhof stud.

In the survey of the world’s top 75 jumping sires that appears in the French publication, Monneron 2007-2008, Quidam de Revel is Number 1 with 48 CSI winners and he is also represented by two sons. Nabab de Reve (out of an Artichaut mare) is 18th with 14 CSI winners, while Guidam (out of a Venutard mare) ranks 19th with 12 winners, including Authentic, second best performer in the world in 2006 and winner of the Grand Prix of Aachen in 2007.
On the WBFSH stallion rankings for 2007, Quidam de Revel is in second place, with 43 horses on the FEI rankings, including seven with + 200 points: Quibell (Lagano), Up Chiqui (Chin Chin), Quidame des Hayettes (Nimmerdor); Quo Vadis (Landgraf I), Integrity (Landgraf I), Godsend du Reverdy (Grand Veneur) and Jadis de Toscane (Laudanum).
Quidam retained his second place on the 2009 WBFSH rankings.

Capitol I was bought by the Holsteiner Verband, and he soon established himself as one of the great showjumping sires, represented internationally by jumpers such as Corso (ridden by the Swiss, Willi Melliger), JR Number One (exported to the United States), Caruso Rex, Calle, and most notably of recent times, Cento, a team gold medallist at the Sydney Games, and who missed out of an individual medal by just one rail!
According to Harm Thormälen, whose family bred Capitol:
“The Capitol horses have scope – scope and easy to handle. Amateurs can ride the Capitol horses. Sometimes they are not ‘blood’ enough, they need blood. In his last years Capitol was only allowed to breed to mares with Thoroughbred blood. The mare sire had to be Thoroughbred, or otherwise Cor de la Bryère – so Capitol got very good mares. It was top management by the Holsteiner Verband, with very good results in the sport. The children of Capitol have won the most money in the sport of any stallion in the world.”
In the 2007-2008 Monneron leaderboard of the top 75 jumping stallions in the world, based on the FEI results of the top 2515 jumpers, Bernard le Courtois finds four major stallion lines: Almé, Cor de la Bryère, Landgraf and Capitol I. Capitol ranks 37th with 8 winners. His best performer is the mare, Gitania – but five of his stallion sons feature in the top 75.
The Capitol son, Carthago is ranked No 2 in the world with 36 winners in 2006. Another son, Cassini I is in 4th place with 29 CSI winners, while Indoctro is 10th with 20 winners. Cento was a great member of the German jumping team but he has also been successful as a sire, coming in at 34th with 9 performers. Interestingly Cassini, Indoctro and Cento, are all out of Caletto II mares.
Capitol is in =18th place on the 2007 FN jumping rankings – behind his sons, Carthago (3rd), Indoctro & Cassini (=6th); Cento is also ranked =18th,
Havana was the high selling foal at the Belgian Horses Auction and sold to the United States for her valuable show jumping pedigree. Havana's elastic movement, sensitivity and powerful jump, topped off by her sweet temperament come as no surprise from her Cassini II and Darco bloodlines.
Havana has an incredible sweet temperament with correct conformation, built for power. Her size makes her an ideal candidate to be bred to medium sized or taller stallions and with a well balanced pedigree with all of the heavy hitters: Capitol I, Cassini II, Darco and Contender, she would cross best with an outcross of French or Belgian blood.
